BAREFOOT GREENS

Barefoot Greens, owned by Major Green, was named for the nickname he earned as a teen selling fresh seafood shoeless on Fredericksburg streets with his father. In 1960, he opened the Barefoot Green fish market at Sophia and Amelia Streets, displaying his boxing gloves and a photo from the ring—he was also a heavyweight boxer known for his knockout punch. The market later became known as a restaurant and eventually reopened as The Happy Clam under the Moncure family.
