Carl’s Art Deco
This painting depicts Carl’s Frozen Custard at 2200 Princess Anne Street, one of Fredericksburg’s most recognizable roadside landmarks. Carl’s opened in 1947, and the current streamlined stand dates to 1953; its iconic roofline, giant cone, and “Creme Shakes Sundaes” sign have made it a lasting symbol of mid-century Fredericksburg. Opened by Carl Sponseller, the famous frozen custard stand is still run by the Sponseller family.
