CARL’S FROZEN CUSTARD

Carl's Frozen Custard in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was founded in 1947 by Carl Sponseller. The famous soft frozen custard stand started in an abandoned gas station and restaurant before the current building was constructed in 1953 by Ashton Skinner, and is known for its Art Moderne design and has been recognized as a Virginia Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remains a family-owned business, upholding the traditions established by Carl Sponseller, including the use of 1940s Electro Freeze machines and a focus on vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors, still in business and still famous.
