Greyhound Bus Depot

The Greyhound Bus Depot at Princess Anne and Wolfe Streets, a lively corner shaped by travel and everyday commerce, and connected Fredericksburg with destinations far beyond the city.

This site also holds a national civil rights story. On May 4, 1961, Fredericksburg was the first stop of the Freedom Rides from Washington, D.C. Organized by the Congress of Racial Equality under James Farmer’s leadership, the riders challenged segregation in interstate travel. Here, they used the terminal’s segregated facilities without incident before continuing south.

The depot is gone, and a fire station now occupies the site at 601 Princess Anne Street. A historical marker commemorates the Freedom Riders and the significance of their first stop.
