Hotel McGuire on Princess Anne Street, painted by John Wayne Edwards

Hotel McGuire

Hotel McGuire stood in the 500 block of Princess Anne Street, directly across from the Rappahannock Hotel. During segregation, these Black-owned hotels offered lodging to Black travelers who were excluded from many other accommodations.

Dr. W. L. Harris, a local Dentist, as the McGuire’s owner, initially in partnership with Dr. P. G. Dabney. The hotel was part of a downtown network of Black businesses that served residents and visitors alike.

The McGuire was later demolished to make way for an addition to neighboring Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site). John Wayne Edwards’s painting preserves its red-brick façade and prominent hotel sign, recalling a significant chapter in Fredericksburg’s history.
