Leggett’s
Leggett’s Department Store was a familiar downtown Fredericksburg retailer located at 1010 Caroline Street, next to the old Victoria Theater, as part of the city’s mid-century commercial life on Caroline Street.
The property itself was originally built around 1930 as two buildings for Spotless Co., also a department store. In 1955, the structures were combined and renovated into Leggett’s Department Store, which remained downtown until 1980, when Leggett’s relocated to Spotsylvania Mall.
After Leggett’s left downtown, the building saw only partial retail use for many years, including occupancy by Tim’s Mart on the ground floor. Today, the site at 1010 Caroline Street remains a notable historic commercial property and has been the subject of redevelopment planning in recent years.
