Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site)
Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site) stands at Princess Anne and Wolfe Streets, beside the former location of Hotel McGuire. Its congregation shares roots with Shiloh Old Site, tracing its story to the city’s nineteenth-century Black Baptist community. Following the congregation’s division in 1888, New Site laid the cornerstone for its church in 1890.
The church became an important home for learning as well as worship. In 1905, the Fredericksburg Normal and Industrial Institute began in its basement with 20 pupils, opening new educational opportunities for Black students before moving to Mayfield the following year.
In later years, the church expanded onto the former McGuire Hotel property. Edwards’s painting recalls the red-brick sanctuary and white steeple, preserving the character of a place that has served generations of Fredericksburg families.
