Woolworth’s
F.W. Woolworth& Co. was one of downtown Fredericksburg’s best-known national variety stores, located at the corner of Caroline and William Streets in the building later identified as 914–918 Caroline Street. The site had previously housed Main Grocery before Woolworth’s took over in 1937.
Woolworth’s became part of everyday downtown life in the mid-20th century and is also remembered as one of the Fredericksburg lunch-counter sites connected to the city’s Civil Rights era. Woolworth’s eventually left downtown for Spotsylvania Mall, reflecting the broader shift of retail activity away from the historic center.
Today, the former Woolworth’s building is no longer a department store. The property at 1001 Caroline Street is now used for antiques retail, currently home to the Antique Court of Shoppes / R&R Antiques, still bearing traces of the building’s former Art Deco storefront.
